From a Brazilian song to a New York exhibition wall.
Refloresta began with a song written by Gilberto Gil in 2021. The book, published by Elo Editora in 2025, gives that text a visual sequence built by Daniel Kondo.
Color fields, animals, repetitions and shifts in scale carry the rhythm across the spreads. The illustrations create their own duration around Gil’s words.
The Society of Illustrators selection placed this work within an international exhibition devoted to contemporary illustration.

Daniel Kondo was unable to attend the April 10 reception. Jesse Paris Smith visited the exhibition, located Refloresta in the Book presentation and documented the work in the gallery.
Her photographs register the scale of the piece, its relation to neighboring works and the dense, informal atmosphere of the Annual reception.

The Annual selection grew from an illustrated sequence conceived for the book. Landscape, fauna and human action move through a compact visual vocabulary of color, texture and repeated forms.
