Editorial Notes

The book is part of the narrative.

A picturebook begins long before an image is placed on a page.

Format, scale, typography, paper, printing, binding, sequence and page turns are not neutral decisions. They shape how a story moves, how long an image lasts and what the reader discovers next.

In these notes, Daniel Kondo looks at books from inside the making process: references, visual systems, production choices, experiments and the relationship between image, rhythm and physical form.

It is a space for thinking about the picturebook as an object that is read with the eyes, the hands and time — extending the practice behind his picturebooks and book-object projects .
